The ancient city of Varanasi, known for its iconic 84 ghats lining the sacred Ganga, is soon going to witness the addition of a new, redeveloped ghat to this historic series. The Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government has transformed the Kachcha Ghat, located near Samne Ghat adjacent to the bridge connecting to Ramnagar, into a fully developed and architecturally aligned permanent ghat.

Special emphasis has been laid on preserving the traditional aesthetic seen in the other historical ghats of Kashi, ensuring that the new construction complements the spiritual and cultural ambiance of the city. The modern ghat is designed not only for religious ceremonies but also with tourists in mind—offering a host of amenities to enhance the visitor experience.

The ghat is being redeveloped by the Uttar Pradesh Projects Corporation Limited at a cost of ₹1055.43 lakh. Stretching 110 meters in length, the ghat will feature a dedicated platform for aarti and puja, intricately carved umbrellas made from Chunar stone, gazebos, changing rooms, high mast and street lighting, signage, clean drinking water, well-laid pathways, parking facilities, stone pitching to prevent erosion, and ramps to ensure accessibility for the elderly and differently-abled. Lush horticulture will further beautify the area, contributing to both environmental and aesthetic value.

Chunar stones—used traditionally in Kashi’s ghats for their strength and timeless appeal—have been carefully incorporated to maintain continuity with Varanasi’s rich architectural legacy. The newly developed ghat is expected to significantly benefit local residents by offering improved facilities for daily Ganga Snan (ritual bathing) and for festivals like Chhath and Dev Deepawali.

Officials have also hinted at future plans to organize water sports activities at the site, adding a modern, recreational dimension to this religious and cultural landmark. It is expected that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may inaugurate the newly constructed ghat during his upcoming visit to Varanasi.

The addition of this ghat not only strengthens the spiritual significance of the Ganga ghats but also aligns with the broader efforts of revitalizing heritage while promoting tourism in the ancient city of Kashi.
