8th Central Pay Commission Should Consider Five-Member Family for Fixing Minimum Wages: AITUC

AITUC also demands ensuring pension parity, and restoration of the Old Pension Scheme for NPS employees

Amarjeet Kaur, General Secretary of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), urged the 8th Central Pay Commission (CPC) to fix the minimum wages based on the requirements of a five-member family, rather than the existing three-unit norm.

Kaur emphasized that it is the legal and moral responsibility of children to take care of their aged parents, and hence the wage calculation must reflect a family of five units.

She further stated that existing pensioners must not face discrimination and their pensions should be revised at par with serving employees effective from January 1, 2006.

Additionally, AITUC has demanded that the 8th CPC consider the restoration of the non-contributory Old Pension Scheme (OPS) for more than 24 lakh Central Government employees currently under the National Pension System (NPS), with retrospective effect from January 1, 2004.

The AITUC Centre released this statement today (October 29, 2025), highlighting that fair wage determination, pension parity, and social security for government employees and pensioners are crucial aspects for ensuring economic justice and dignity for the working class.
