BCCL Champions Women Empowerment In Healthcare And Technology
Koyla Nagar Hospital Runs First All-Women Shift; Women Technicians Lead New LED & Solar Repair Centre in Dhanbad

In a bold step towards gender inclusivity and empowerment, Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL), has launched two groundbreaking women-led initiatives in Dhanbad, Jharkhand.
The company rolled out the first-ever general shift at Koyla Nagar Hospital operated entirely by women. From doctors and nurses to support staff, the hospital shift was managed by an all-women team, symbolizing a historic moment in public sector healthcare. This milestone initiative was inaugurated by Shri Samiran Dutta, Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD), BCCL, in the presence of Directors, senior officers, and leading women healthcare officials.
Dr. Poonam Dubey, Chief of Medical Services, BCCL, and Dr. Vandana Thakur, Chief Medical Officer, Central Hospital Dhanbad, were among the key women leaders present at the occasion.

“This initiative is a reflection of BCCL’s ongoing commitment to gender parity and women’s leadership,” said CMD Samiran Dutta. “From healthcare to core operations, women are increasingly taking the lead in shaping the future of our organization.”
This forward-thinking move aligns with the Ministry of Coal and CIL’s broader vision to foster inclusivity and excellence in public sector enterprises.
The development comes on the heels of BCCL’s Central Hospital Dhanbad (CHD) receiving dual ISO certifications — ISO 9001:2015 for Quality Management and ISO 45001:2018 for Occupational Health and Safety — from UKAF CERT Limited, United Kingdom. These certifications place CHD among an elite group of public sector hospitals in India recognized for both quality and occupational health standards.
In a parallel development, BCCL also inaugurated a first-of-its-kind centralised technical centre for the repair and maintenance of LED and solar energy equipment — staffed entirely by women technicians. Located at Koyla Nagar, the new workshop represents a significant leap in integrating women into core technical domains traditionally dominated by men.
The centre is currently being run by seven women employees from the E&M (Electrical & Mechanical) department, under the supervision of the workshop in-charge. The facility is equipped to handle the repair of various LED lights, solar lamps, and other electrical devices.
“Empowerment also means trust in capability,” CMD Samiran Dutta remarked during the inauguration. “This centre demonstrates that women are not only excelling in caregiving roles but also making their mark in engineering and technology.”
These twin initiatives underscore BCCL’s holistic approach to inclusive and sustainable growth. By creating meaningful spaces for women across diverse sectors — from healthcare to engineering — BCCL continues to affirm its identity as a progressive and people-centric public sector enterprise.
