Bhupender Gupta is Chairman & Managing Director of NHPC Limited
Veteran power sector leader with over 34 years of experience to steer India’s largest hydropower PSU towards clean energy goals


Bhupender Gupta, presently Chairman and Managing Director of SJVN Limited, has officially taken charge as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NHPC Limited, a Schedule ‘A’ Navratna Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU).
Gupta brings with him more than 34 years of professional experience, including over three decades dedicated to the power sector. Prior to this appointment, he was serving as Director (Technical) at THDC India Limited while concurrently holding additional charge as CMD of SJVN.
His distinguished career spans several leadership positions, including Director (Technical) at the Punatsangchhu Hydroelectric Project Authority in Bhutan and Additional CEO at REC subsidiaries—REC Transmission Projects Co. Ltd. and REC Power Distribution Co. Ltd.—where he oversaw execution, project management, and consultancy for large-scale power infrastructure projects.
Earlier, Gupta made significant contributions at SJVN, particularly in the planning and commissioning of the 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station in Himachal Pradesh. He also served on deputation at the 1020 MW Tala Hydroelectric Project in Bhutan from 2002 to 2005.
An electrical engineering graduate with an MBA in Operations Management, Bhupender Gupta is widely recognised for his technical expertise and strategic leadership in hydropower and transmission. As CMD of NHPC, he is expected to play a key role in advancing India’s clean and sustainable energy agenda.
