BIS Launches Specialized Textile Testing Laboratory In Hyderabad

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) marked a significant milestone with the inauguration of its Hyderabad Branch Laboratory dedicated to the testing of specialized textile products. The event was led by Pramod Kumar Tiwari, IAS, Director General of BIS, who emphasized the laboratory’s vital role in strengthening the quality ecosystem in the textile sector through state-of-the-art testing facilities.

The ceremony witnessed the presence of senior BIS officials, including Nishat Sultana Haque, Deputy Director General (Laboratories); Dr. Meenakshi Ganesan, Deputy Director General (Southern Region) and Head-Southern Regional Laboratory and Hyderabad Branch Laboratory; Srikanth, Head-Hyderabad Branch Office, and heads of BIS laboratories from across India.

Speaking on the occasion, Pramod Kumar Tiwari, IAS, said, “The establishment of this specialized textiles testing laboratory in Hyderabad is a significant step in strengthening the nation’s quality infrastructure. This facility will play a critical role in enforcing Quality Control Orders (QCOs) issued by the Government of India, ensuring textile products meet the highest national standards. Soon, testing facilities for yarn will also be operational in this laboratory, further expanding its capabilities.”

He also highlighted the presence of a gold testing laboratory in the same building, where all gold samples are tested for purity. This facility is instrumental in ensuring the authenticity and standardization of gold products in the market.

In addition to inaugurating the laboratory, Tiwari launched the Universal Testing Machine (UTM) for textile testing, a versatile tool for assessing the quality and durability of various textile products.

The event underscored the BIS’s commitment to promoting quality consciousness among manufacturers and consumers alike. Officials present at the ceremony reiterated the importance of opting for ISI-marked products, which guarantee adherence to BIS standards and ensure safety, reliability, and durability. The Hyderabad Branch Laboratory is expected to play a pivotal role in advancing India’s textile standards, supporting manufacturers in enhancing their product quality, and contributing to the overall growth of the textile industry.
