Climate Case : Man Guilty As Charged
A very basic change can bring about a massive saving in power consumed, opines Vikas Tyagi
The searing heat that scorched western Canada and the US at the end of June 21 was “virtually impossible” without climate change, say scientists. And so were the Europe’s deadly floods. India is also expected to face irreversible impacts of climate crisis, an IPCC report has warned. The same report has also flagged that World not doing nearly enough to stop ‘catastrophic’ global warming.
The planet is warming fast, depending on whose predictions you read, the consequences will range from serious to apocalyptic.
The responsibility for tackling climate change lies with decision-makers, industry, and ordinary citizens. Governments and parliaments play a key role, followed by the authorities that deal with technology.
CONSUMPTION IS THE OTHER SIDE OF THE EQUATION
So long as alternative energy production is still developing, emissions could be reduced by reducing energy consumption.
Today energy is climbing up the corporate agenda, firms create advantage either by keeping costs low or through differentiation.
ENERGY STRATEGY
Energy has to become a C-suite issue-The CXOs have to be actively involved in their energy road map. An energy strategy will be hard to implement without explicit engagement from the CEO and a clear governance structure.
HOW CAN WE CONTRIBUTE
ENERGY SAVED IS ENERGY PRODUCED
Small investments in latest technologies can make significant contribution towards saving energy consumed and thereby reducing carbon foot print.
Across industries rotary equipment are the prime mover of fluids in a plant. A very basic change can bring about a massive saving in power consumed.
Now, what could be the miracle we are discussing; it’s the change in material used for stationary wear ring of a rotary equipment.
DuPont™ Vespel® CR-6100 is a composite material manufactured from Teflon® PFA and carbon fibers. It is one of the top performing thermoplastics due to its excellent mechanical properties even at very high operating temperatures and high-pressure applications with very good chemical resistance. It has gained recognition under the ISO 13709 and the API 610 Standard. Vespel can replace metal, carbon, bronze, and other composite materials for use in pump wear rings and similar wear parts in centrifugal pumps.
Vespel minimizes the risk of pump seizure and allows you to reduce the clearance at these components, generally to 50% below the original design value. Reduced clearance improves efficiency, production potential and delivers significant energy savings. About 3-5% efficiency increase is typical.
On pan-India basis, as the number of pump installations run into tens of thousands, the saving potential in OPEX and the reduction in Carbon Foot Print of Indian industrial installations looks very promising.
