CMPDI Announces Results Of Hackathon On Carbon Capture Technology
A total of 24 proposals were submitted across the three themes

The Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDI), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited, under the Ministry of Coal, has announced the results of its recently concluded Hackathon on Carbon Capture Technology. The event, which ran from May 12 to June 10, 2025, aimed to promote innovative solutions for reducing carbon emissions and supporting India’s climate commitments.
The hackathon focused on three key problem statements:
- Direct Air Capture (DAC) of Greenhouse Gases (GHG)
- Geological Storage of Captured CO₂ in Coal-Bearing Regions of India
- Development of Carbon Capture-Based Biofuel Utilizing Algae Cultured in Mine Pit Lakes

Winner: Urjanovac Pvt. Ltd.
1st Runner-up: IIT Jammu
2nd Runner-up: IIT (ISM) Dhanbad
- Geological Storage of Captured CO₂
Winner: NIT Calicut
1st Runner-up: TechX Earth Space Pvt. Ltd.
2nd Runner-up: IIT (ISM) Dhanbad
- Biofuel from Algae in Mine Pit Lakes
Winner: Algae Labs Pvt. Ltd., Tamil Nadu
1st Runner-up: North East Institute of Science and Technology (NEIST), Jorhat, Assam
2nd Runner-up: Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research (CIMFR)
A total of 24 proposals were submitted across the three themes. The top five entries in each category were shortlisted based on rigorous evaluation criteria and presented their ideas before an esteemed panel of judges.
The hackathon saw enthusiastic participation from startups, academic institutions, research organizations, corporations, and non-profit bodies. The event successfully attracted innovative and scalable ideas in alignment with India’s climate goals and Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Winning teams will now have the opportunity to collaborate with industry experts, tackle real-world challenges, and contribute to developing sustainable solutions for carbon management in the energy sector.
