Coal Output and Dispatches Surge as Captive, Commercial Mines Maintain Strong Growth

Production rises 5.75% in December 2025; FY26 cumulative output up 9.72% on policy support and operational efficiency

Coal production and dispatches from captive and commercial mines registered steady growth in December 2025, reflecting strong performance during FY 2025–26. Coal output during the month stood at 19.48 million tonnes (MT), while dispatches were recorded at 18.02 MT, marking a year-on-year production growth of 5.75%.

During the third quarter of FY 2025–26, cumulative coal production reached 54.14 MT, with dispatches of 50.61 MT, reflecting a 5.35% year-on-year growth. For the financial year so far (up to December), coal production rose by 9.72%, while dispatches increased by 6.98% compared to the corresponding period last year.

The Ministry of Coal attributed the improved performance to strategic policy initiatives, close monitoring, and faster operational clearances, which have enhanced capacity utilisation and efficiency. The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening captive and commercial mining to ensure reliable coal supply and support India’s long-term energy security goals under Viksit Bharat 2047.
