Deepak Gupta has assumed charge as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of GAIL (India) Limited, India’s largest natural gas company, following the superannuation of Sandeep Kumar Gupta on February 28, 2026.
His appointment comes after an extensive selection process conducted by the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB), involving a marathon round of interviews among 12 shortlisted candidates, from which Gupta emerged as the top choice to lead the Maharatna PSU.
Over 35 Years of Experience in Oil & Gas
A distinguished Mechanical Engineer from Delhi College of Engineering (now Delhi Technological University) and a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) from the Project Management Institute (PMI), USA, Deepak Gupta brings more than 35 years of rich and diverse experience across the oil and gas sector.
He is widely known for his expertise in project management, construction management, and business development spanning the entire hydrocarbon value chain.
Leadership in Mega Infrastructure Projects
During his long and distinguished tenure at Engineers India Limited (EIL), Gupta played a pivotal role in executing several complex, large-scale infrastructure projects across global geographies under multiple execution models, including EPC (LSTK), EPCM, OBE, and PMC.
Among his most notable achievements was his contribution to the $19-billion, 650 KBPSD Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical Complex in Nigeria — the world’s largest single-train greenfield refinery and Africa’s biggest refining project.
He also led the HMEL Bhatinda Polymer Project, one of India’s largest petrochemical installations, and contributed to Mongolia’s first greenfield refinery project, strengthening India’s global energy engagement.
His leadership further extended to key strategic projects such as the Petrochemical Expansion Project at GAIL’s Pata complex and the PFCC Unit under Phase-III expansion of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL).
Thought Leadership and Industry Contribution
As Convener of the CHT Committee on Project Execution Best Practices, Gupta has played an important role in advancing systemic improvements in project execution methodologies within India’s energy sector.
A respected thought leader, he has authored several technical papers focusing on fast-track execution, critical engineering packages, and digital transformation in project management. Many of his ideas on execution excellence and digitalization have evolved into institutional best practices.
He is also a regular speaker at national and international forums, where his insights on mega-project implementation, petrochemical infrastructure, and sustainable industrial growth have received wide recognition.
