Two Fatal Accidents in Three Weeks at Field Gun Factory, Kanpur Raise Questions on Safety Standards at AWEIL

BPMS demands high-level inquiry, accountability of senior management, and uniform safety directives across all Ordnance Factories under AWEIL

In a disturbing development, two fatal accidents within three weeks at the Field Gun Factory, Kanpur, under Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Limited (AWEIL), have raised serious concerns over safety lapses and negligence in emergency preparedness.

On September 26, 2025, a contract worker sustained severe injuries in a workplace mishap and later succumbed. Shockingly, there was no ambulance or medical officer available on-site, which delayed immediate treatment. The victim was first shifted to Ordnance Hospital, Armapur Estate, and later referred to a specialist centre in Kanpur, where he was declared dead.

Barely three weeks ago, another contract worker lost his life in a similar accident at the same factory, highlighting repeated failures in safety compliance and emergency response mechanisms.

Reacting strongly, Bhartiya Pratiraksha Mazdoor Sangh (BPMS) Working President Mukesh Singh has written to the CMD of AWEIL, demanding a high-level inquiry, accountability of senior management, and immediate corrective measures.

BPMS has urged AWEIL to:

  • Constitute a high-level inquiry committee to probe both incidents.
  • Fix accountability at the top level of factory management, not just lower officials.
  • Ensure uniform safety protocols and the availability of ambulances and medical staff in all Ordnance Factories under AWEIL.
  • Implement corrective steps to avoid recurrence of such tragedies.

Singh stressed that every life—whether of a regular employee or contractual worker—is equally precious, and compensation cannot substitute systemic accountability.

The union has also warned that such repeated accidents could erode AWEIL’s credibility and severely affect worker morale if decisive action is not taken.
