Former CBDT Chief Nitin Gupta Appointed Chairperson – NFRA
Watchdog currently auditing Gensol; probing discrepancies in IndusInd Bank accounts

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has appointed Nitin Gupta, former Chairperson of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), as the new Chairperson of the National Financial Reporting Authority (NFRA), the country’s independent audit regulator.
Gupta, a 1986-batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, succeeds Ravneet Kaur, who had been serving as the acting chairperson. He will serve a term of three years or until he turns 65, whichever is earlier.
A civil engineer by education, Gupta has had an extensive career in public service. Apart from his role at the CBDT, he also served for over three years as Director General at the Competition Commission of India in New Delhi.
He takes over at a time when the NFRA is actively auditing Gensol Engineering Ltd. and is reviewing discrepancies in account balances reported by IndusInd Bank, signaling the authority’s focus on strengthening audit discipline and financial transparency.
The last full-time chairperson of NFRA was Ajay Bhushan Pandey, former CEO of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).
In addition to Gupta’s appointment, the ACC has named three full-time members to the Authority:
- Smita Jhingran, retired IRS officer
- P. Daniels, retired Indian Defence Estates Service officer
- Sushil Kumar Jaiswal, retired Indian Audit and Accounts Service officer
The appointments mark a significant step in reinforcing NFRA’s institutional capacity as it intensifies oversight in India’s corporate and financial audit landscape.
