Now Vehicles Older than 15 Years Can Stay on Roads, Notifies Government of India
While the changes would impact vehicle owners nationwide, they would not affect owners in Delhi-NCR, where a court order mandates the scrapping of diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years

In a major relief to vehicle owners across the country, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has notified that vehicles older than 15 years will now be allowed to remain on roads for an additional five years, subject to renewal of registration. Vehicle owners will have to pay a prescribed fee for the extension of registration.
The move is expected to benefit lakhs of vehicle owners whose registrations were nearing expiry. However, the notification clearly states that this relaxation will not apply to Delhi-NCR, where the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and Supreme Court orders mandate stricter rules — scrapping of diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years.
Key Highlights of the Notification:
- Vehicles older than 15 years can ply for an additional five years after registration renewal.
- Renewal will require payment of a prescribed fee.
- Applicable across India except Delhi-NCR, where court orders prevail.
- Diesel vehicles above 10 years and petrol vehicles above 15 years remain banned in Delhi-NCR.
The official order by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has been made available for public reference.

This policy change is expected to provide relief to vehicle owners in other states while ensuring environmental safeguards remain in place in pollution-sensitive Delhi-NCR.
