Governments globally are increasingly promoting clean mobility solutions, including electric vehicles (EVs), due to the growing impacts of climate change and rising greenhouse gas emissions. The road transport sector remains a significant contributor to these emissions. With increased environmental consciousness, the adoption of EVs, particularly light-duty electric vehicles (LDVs), has been on a consistent rise worldwide.
In 2023, 88% of global EV sales were concentrated in the four largest LDV markets: China, Europe, the United States, and India, which together accounted for approximately 63% of worldwide sales.
Key Market Highlights in 2023:
China:
- Remained the world’s largest EV market, selling over 7 million EVs.
- Dominated global EV production, contributing approximately 66% of the total.
- About 90% of EVs produced in China were sold domestically.
Europe:
- EVs constituted 21% of all new LDVs sold.
- Accounted for 22% of global EV production.
- Approximately 85% of EVs produced were sold domestically.
United States:
- EV sales increased to 9% of all new LDVs, up from 7% in 2022.
- Contributed 10% to global EV production.
- About 81% of EVs produced were sold domestically.
India:
- The share of EV sales grew to 2% in 2023, doubling from 1% in 2022.
- EV production in India remained minimal.
- Despite the small production numbers, all major Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) saw increased sales.
- MG: Increased its EV market share from 9% in 2022 to 23% in 2023.
- Stellantis: Achieved a 15% share of the EV market.
These trends highlight China’s dominant position in both production and sales of EVs, Europe’s steady market share, the growing adoption in the United States, and India’s emerging but rapidly growing EV market. The global push for cleaner mobility solutions is evident in the consistent growth of EV sales and the increasing market penetration in key regions.
