IndiGo Announces New Aviation Corridor Between India and Greece; Athens to be Served by India’s First Airbus A321XLR from January 2026
IndiGo becomes the only Indian airline to offer direct connectivity between India and Greece

New Delhi, September 15, 2025: IndiGo, India’s preferred airline, today announced Athens as the inaugural destination to be served by its first Airbus A321XLR aircraft. India’s first A321XLR is expected to join IndiGo’s fleet by the end of 2025, with six weekly direct flights to Athens commencing in early January 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.
With this milestone, IndiGo will be the only Indian carrier offering direct flights between India and Greece. The airline plans to operate three weekly frequencies each from both Delhi and Mumbai to Athens.
This new connection will also provide convenient access to Greece’s iconic islands — including Santorini, Mykonos, and Crete — as well as other regional European destinations. It is set to strengthen leisure, MICE, and wedding tourism between the two countries, while expanding IndiGo’s growing European footprint.
Pieter Elbers, Chief Executive Officer, IndiGo, said: “Athens as the inaugural destination for IndiGo’s, and India’s, first Airbus A321XLR is a symbolic milestone of India’s aviation ascent. IndiGo is proud to be the only Indian airline, currently, to announce direct flights between India and Greece – two ancient civilizations with a history of long-standing ties, now deepened by modern bilateral and economic relations. This new aviation corridor is a strategic step in IndiGo’s international expansion and aligns perfectly with India’s growing economy and tourism industry. With convenient schedules for travellers, we are confident this route will stimulate demand for both business and leisure travel. Looking ahead, we also plan to connect to more destinations in Greece, strengthening connectivity between our two nations.”
The Airbus A321XLR, a next-generation long-range narrow-body aircraft, is designed to fly up to 8,700 km, enabling non-stop connections from India to Southern Europe while maintaining IndiGo’s hallmark cost-efficiency. The aircraft will feature Economy Class as well as IndiGoStretch, offering extra comfort with enhanced legroom, in-flight entertainment, and an elevated cabin experience.
The launch of Athens as IndiGo’s first XLR route comes at a time when the India–Europe aviation market is expanding rapidly, driven by surging business and leisure demand. Greece, emerging as a key tourism and trade hub, complements India’s fast-growing outbound travel market. Direct flights to Athens will further enhance people-to-people, cultural, and economic exchanges between the two countries.
