K. Sanjay Murthy To Be Next CAG Of India

He will succeed Girish Chandra Murmu, who superannuates on November 20

K. Sanjay Murthy, a 1989-batch IAS officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre, has been appointed as the next Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India. He will succeed Girish Chandra Murmu, who is retiring on November 20, 2024.

The Ministry of Finance announced his appointment through a notification, stating, “By virtue of the power vested in her by clause (1) of Article 148 of the Constitution of India, the President has been pleased to appoint Shri K. Sanjay Murthy to be the Comptroller and Auditor General of India with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.”

Current Role:

Murthy is presently the Secretary, Department of Higher Education, under the Ministry of Education, a position he has held since October 1, 2021.

Challenges:

His tenure as Higher Education Secretary has been overshadowed by controversies, particularly incidents of paper leaks, which drew significant criticism.

About the CAG Role:

The Comptroller and Auditor General of India is a constitutional authority responsible for auditing all receipts and expenditures of the Government of India and the state governments, including public sector undertakings. The CAG’s role is crucial in ensuring transparency and accountability in public financial management.
