Mumbai Grapples With CNG Shortage After GAIL Pipeline Damage; Restoration Expected by November 18 Noon
According to Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL), the damage affected gas supply at its City Gate Station (CGS) in Wadala

A large-scale disruption in compressed natural gas (CNG) supply triggered widespread commute delays across Mumbai on Monday morning, following third-party damage to GAIL’s main gas pipeline inside the Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers (RCF) premises in Trombay.
According to Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL), the damage affected gas supply at its City Gate Station (CGS) in Wadala, leading to reduced pressure across the pipeline network since Sunday.
225 Out of 389 CNG Stations Operational
MGL confirmed that while uninterrupted supply to domestic PNG consumers is being ensured on priority, the stoppage of supply at CGS Wadala has forced several CNG stations in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai to temporarily shut down.
Currently, only 225 out of MGL’s 389 CNG stations are operational, significantly impacting public transport and daily commuters.
Long Queues and Traffic Build-Ups Across the City
The sudden shortage led to chaotic scenes across several stretches of Mumbai early Monday. Long queues of autos, taxis, and aggregator cabs were spotted outside multiple fuel stations, spilling over onto busy roads and causing traffic congestion.
Visuals circulating on social media showed kilometres-long lines of public transport vehicles, with several drivers claiming they had waited through the night to refuel. Many cab and auto drivers reported losing several hours of income due to the restricted availability of CNG.
Restoration by November 18 Noon
MGL stated that GAIL has already begun rectification work inside the RCF premises. Gas supply is expected to normalize once the repairs are completed and the flow to CGS Wadala is fully restored.
“The restoration of gas supply is expected by tomorrow, i.e., by 18th November 2025 noon. Inconvenience caused is regretted,” MGL said in its official communication.
- City Transport Severely Affected
- Auto-rickshaws and taxis dependent on CNG
- BEST buses operating on CNG
- App-based cabs
- Commercial vehicles and delivery fleets
With Monday being a working day, commuters reported delays in reaching offices, schools, and appointments across the city.
Authorities Monitoring Situation
City authorities are monitoring the situation closely, as transport bodies coordinate with MGL for updates. Traffic police were deployed in several pockets to manage congestion around fuel stations.
