NHAI Implements Extensive Measures to Improve Highway Safety Amid Foggy Winter Conditions

To address the challenges posed by reduced visibility during the winter fog season, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has rolled out a comprehensive set of mitigation measures aimed at enhancing safety for National Highway users across the country.

Engineering Measures for Enhanced Visibility

As part of its engineering interventions, NHAI is undertaking the reinstallation of missing or damaged road signs and road studs, rectification of faded or inadequate pavement markings, and installation of reflective markers and retro-reflective yellow stickers on road safety assets such as metal beam crash barriers.

Special attention is being given to construction zones, where enhanced safety protocols including proper barricading, diversion signage, and the installation of solar blinkers at median openings are being implemented to maximise visibility during foggy conditions.

Safety Awareness Initiatives

To alert commuters about low-visibility conditions, NHAI is deploying Variable Message Signs (VMS) and electronic signages displaying fog alerts and speed advisories. Public Address Systems are being used in fog-prone areas, while electronic billboards, radio announcements, and social media platforms are disseminating public safety messages.

Additionally, reflective tapes are being encouraged on vehicles to improve visibility during dense fog.

Enhanced Monitoring and Emergency Preparedness

NHAI field offices have been directed to conduct weekly night-time inspections to assess visibility conditions and identify stretches requiring additional safety provisions. Highway Patrol vehicles equipped with blinking batons will be stationed near fog-prone zones to guide traffic.

The authority has also mandated the use of reflective jackets by officials and workers engaged in highway-related activities. Coordination with local law enforcement, ambulance services, and municipal authorities has been strengthened, with joint emergency response drills planned in collaboration with traffic police.

Empowering Field Officers

To ensure swift action, NHAI has delegated financial powers to its field officers for immediate rectification of accident-prone locations, allowing timely implementation of visibility-enhancing measures during foggy weather.

Advisory for Highway Commuters

NHAI has urged commuters to adopt safe driving practices during foggy conditions, including:

• Maintaining lane discipline and safe distance
• Driving at speeds of 30 km/hr or less
• Using blinking headlights and taillights
• Avoiding parking on highways except at designated areas
• Exercising caution near construction zones and diversions
• Installing reflective tapes on commercial vehicles (white on front, red at rear)

Reaffirming its commitment, NHAI stated that it will continue to take all necessary steps to ensure safe and seamless travel on National Highways during the winter season.
