NHAI to Deploy Network Survey Vehicles across India for Over 20,000 km of National Highways

The data collected by NSVs will help NHAI identify deficiencies in road infrastructure and take timely corrective measures

To enhance the riding experience of commuters on National Highways, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to deploy Network Survey Vehicles (NSVs) across 23 states, covering more than 20,933 km of National Highway stretches. These advanced vehicles will collect, process, and analyze crucial data related to road inventory and pavement conditions, including defects like surface cracks, potholes, and patches.

The data collected by NSVs will help NHAI identify deficiencies in road infrastructure and take timely corrective measures to improve the overall condition and safety of National Highways.

The survey data will be uploaded to NHAI’s AI-based “Data Lake” portal, where a team of experts will analyze it to generate actionable insights. This data will also be preserved for future technical purposes in the Road Asset Management System (RAMS) in accordance with Government of India guidelines.

The 3D laser-based NSV system is capable of automatically capturing and reporting road defects using high-resolution 360-degree cameras, DGPS (Differential Global Positioning System), IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit), and DMI (Distance Measuring Indicator). Equipped with advanced data acquisition and processing software, these vehicles ensure precise measurement of road conditions.

NHAI plans to collect data for all 2/4/6/8-lane projects using NSVs before the start of work and subsequently at regular intervals of every six months. To implement this initiative, NHAI has invited bids from qualified companies for the deployment of these vehicles.

The Network Survey Vehicle (NSV) system represents a significant technological leap in road asset management, enabling data-driven decision-making for pavement maintenance, infrastructure planning, and road safety enhancement. This initiative underscores NHAI’s commitment to building and maintaining a world-class highway network in India.
