NHAI Signs MoU with Reliance Jio to Roll Out Telecom-Based Safety Alert System on National Highways
NHAI also plans to undertake similar collaborations with other telecom service providers to expand the initiative’s reach

In a major step toward enhancing commuter safety and ensuring seamless travel across India’s National Highways, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Reliance Jio to implement a telecom-enabled safety alert system nationwide.
Leveraging Jio’s expansive 4G and 5G network, the new system will deliver advance warnings to travellers approaching high-risk zones, including accident-prone stretches, stray cattle areas, fog-affected regions and emergency diversions. Alerts will be issued through SMS, WhatsApp and high-priority calls to ensure timely communication.
According to NHAI, the automated system will function for all Jio mobile users on or near National Highways, providing early warnings well before commuters enter hazardous zones. The solution utilizes existing telecom towers, enabling rapid deployment without requiring additional roadside hardware.
The system will be gradually integrated with key NHAI digital platforms such as the Rajmargyatra mobile app and the emergency helpline number 1033.
NHAI Chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav said the collaboration marks a significant advancement in technology-enabled road safety. “This initiative marks an important step forward in providing timely and reliable information to commuters, enabling them to make informed decisions and adopt safer driving practices well in advance. I am sure that this initiative will set a new benchmark in technology-enabled road safety management on National Highway,” he added.
Jyotindra Thacker, President, Reliance Jio, noted that the initiative harnesses Jio’s extensive digital infrastructure—serving over 500 million users—to deliver safety alerts at scale and improve highway travel awareness.
The initial pilot phase will focus on risk-zone identification and alert calibration across select NHAI regional offices. The system will adhere to all regulatory and data-protection guidelines.
NHAI also plans to undertake similar collaborations with other telecom service providers to expand the initiative’s reach. By merging robust telecom networks with real-time communication mechanisms, the project aims to significantly reduce preventable accidents and enhance overall commuter safety.
NHAI reaffirmed its commitment to introducing innovative and scalable solutions for safer, smarter and more efficient travel across India’s National Highways.
