Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) — the government’s apex headhunting body for top public sector positions — has rejected all 12 candidates interviewed on May 21, 2025, for the coveted post of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NTPC Limited, India’s largest power generation company.

The rejection of the entire candidate slate underscores the board’s stringent evaluation process and its insistence on visionary leadership at a time when the Indian power sector is undergoing a paradigm shift.

As a result, the current CMD, Gurdeep Singh, has been granted an extension — a decision seen as a strong vote of confidence in his leadership. His continued tenure comes at a critical juncture when NTPC is navigating complex challenges including the pressure of rising debt levels among conventional power producers, falling tariffs, and the aggressive growth of renewable energy competitors.

Since taking over as CMD in February 2016, Gurdeep Singh has been instrumental in consolidating NTPC’s leadership in the power sector. Under his stewardship, the company has not only maintained its dominance in coal-based generation but has also accelerated its push into green and renewable energy, aligning with India’s ambitious climate goals and global sustainability commitments.
