NTPC North Karanpura Achieves COD Of Unit-3, Strengthening National Power Infrastructure

NTPC Group’s total installed capacity has now reached 81,368 MW, further consolidating its position as India’s leading energy provider

NTPC North Karanpura has successfully declared the Commercial Operation Date (COD) of Unit-3 (660 MW) on the night of June 15, 2025 at 00:00 hours. With this milestone, all three units of the project are now operational, bringing the total installed capacity of the station to
1,980 MW.

With the commissioning of Unit-3, NTPC Group’s total installed capacity has now reached 81,368 MW, further consolidating its position as India’s leading energy provider. This achievement marks a significant step forward in enhancing regional energy availability and contributes meaningfully to India’s growing power requirements.

NTPC North Karanpura Super Thermal Power Project (NKSTPP) has a total planned capacity of 1,980 MW, comprising three units of 660 MW each. Strategically located in Chatra district of Jharkhand, this pit-head project is poised to play a crucial role in supplying power to Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha, West Bengal, and Sikkim, ensuring 24×7 availability of reliable and affordable electricity for the eastern region of India.

Notably, NTPC North Karanpura is India’s first Supercritical Thermal Power Project to incorporate an Air-Cooled Condenser (ACC) of such scale, reducing water consumption to just one-third compared to traditional water-cooled condensers. This technological innovation highlights NTPC’s dedication to sustainable and efficient power generation.

Commenting on the development, S.K. Suar, Executive Director (Head of Project), NTPC North Karanpura, said,”The commissioning of Unit-3 is a proud moment for all of us. It represents the culmination of dedicated efforts, technical excellence, and strong teamwork by our entire project team.”
