OIL and HPCL Sign MoU for CBG Project at IEW 2026; Minister Puri Releases Coffee Table Book on India’s Bio-Gas Journey

CPSU partnership strengthens India’s bioenergy push as Compressed Bio-Gas gains momentum at IEW 2026

Oil India Limited (OIL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during India Energy Week (IEW) 2026 to collaborate on the development of a Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) project, marking another significant step in India’s clean energy transition.

The MoU establishes a framework for joint efforts between the two public sector undertakings to promote cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions through waste-to-energy initiatives. The collaboration aligns with India’s broader energy transition objectives by supporting a circular economy, reducing carbon emissions, and strengthening the domestic bio-energy ecosystem.

The partnership reflects the growing role of CPSUs in advancing alternative fuels and building resilient green energy infrastructure. CBG, derived from organic waste and agricultural residues, is increasingly being positioned as a viable substitute for conventional fossil fuels, contributing to both energy security and environmental sustainability.

In another key development at IEW 2026, a Coffee Table Book on Compressed Bio-Gas, brought out by Oil India Limited under the patronage of the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoPNG), was released by the Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri. The release took place in the presence of Dr Neeraj Mittal, Secretary, MoPNG; Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE); and Praveen Mal Khanooja, Additional Secretary, MoPNG.

The publication chronicles the evolution of India’s CBG ecosystem, tracing its journey from policy frameworks to CPSU-led implementation. It highlights how institutional learning, governance mechanisms, and operational discipline are shaping CBG into long-term public energy and environmental infrastructure.

The book also underlines the critical role of inter-ministerial coordination and PSU leadership in scaling up bio-energy projects across the country, reinforcing India’s commitment to sustainable development and low-carbon growth.

With the OIL–HPCL collaboration and the release of the Coffee Table Book, IEW 2026 once again underscored India’s resolve to accelerate clean energy adoption and position CBG as a key pillar of its future energy mix.
