Patna Unveils India’s First Two-Lane Double-Decker Elevated Corridor
A Historic Leap in Urban Infrastructure and Traffic Management

Patna is set to redefine urban mobility with the near completion of India’s first two-lane double-decker elevated corridor; an engineering marvel aimed at decongesting one of the busiest stretches in the city.

The Gandhi Maidan–PMCH–Ashok Rajpath–Science College Double Decker Elevated Corridor is now 90% complete and is expected to be fully operational by May 31, 2025.

With a sanctioned cost of ₹422 crore, this project is a landmark initiative by the Government of Bihar to improve connectivity without land acquisition — a first in densely built urban India.
Key Highlights:
Upper Deck (Tier-2):
- Length: 2,175.50 meters
- Route: Kargil Chowk to Science College
- Traffic Flow: One-way from Gandhi Maidan → Science College
Lower Deck (Tier-1):
- Length: 1,449.30 meters
- Route: Patna College to Gandhi Maidan
- Traffic Flow: One-way from Science College → Gandhi Maidan
- Structure Type: Composite RCC deck on steel girders, supported by deep pile foundations (44–51m)
- Deck Width: 8.50 meters
- Connectivity: Seamless integration with Ganga Path and 3 Multi-Level Car Parking (MLCP) points at PMCH
Strategic Benefits
- Direct solution to traffic snarls on the high-density Ashok Rajpath corridor
- Faster access to critical institutions including NIT Patna, PMCH, and Science College
- Improved connectivity to Ganga Path, Krishna Ghat, Patna City, Gaighat, and Kachchi Dargah
- Minimal disruption to existing infrastructure — no land acquisition required
A First for India
This project stands as India’s first direction-based, two-lane double-decker flyover, using an innovative, space-efficient vertical design to streamline traffic in opposite directions on separate decks — a bold step in scientific urban traffic management.
The final phase, which involves connecting the corridor to the multi-level parking structure at PMCH, is currently in progress and is being coordinated with metro construction work in the area.

About the Project
Initiated on January 15, 2022, the double-decker corridor is a part of Bihar’s broader vision to transform Patna into a smart, accessible, and future-ready capital city. The project demonstrates how innovative urban planning can improve lives while preserving space and heritage.
