Highly placed sources indicate that there are strong changes of another extension to the present CMD of NTPC, Gurdeep Singh.

Singh, had been granted a five-year extension till July 2025, making him one of the longest-serving CMDs of India’s largest power generation company. His extension is seen as a recognition of his pivotal role in maintaining NTPC’s dominance in the power sector, especially at a time when many conventional power producers are grappling with rising debt, falling tariffs, and increasing competition from renewable energy players.

Under Singh’s leadership, NTPC has not only sustained its position as a market leader but has also made significant strides toward transitioning from coal-based generation to green and renewable energy. This strategic shift aligns with India’s broader climate commitments and energy transition goals.

Gurdeep Singh took over as CMD of NTPC in February 2016. Prior to that, he served as the Managing Director of Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Ltd (GSECL), where he was credited with several operational and financial improvements.
