Prime Minister Modi Lays Foundation Stone of Two Major NEEPCO Hydro Projects in Arunachal Pradesh
Both projects expected to generate 1,800 million units annually

Harnessing the vast hydroelectric potential of Arunachal Pradesh and promoting sustainable energy generation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today laid the foundation stone of two major hydropower projects worth over ₹3,700 crore in Itanagar.
The Heo Hydro Electric Project (240 MW) and the Tato-I Hydro Electric Project (186 MW) will be developed in the Siyom sub-basin of Shi Yomi district by the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO), a wholly owned subsidiary of NTPC Limited, in joint venture with the Government of Arunachal Pradesh.
The 240 MW Heo Project (3×80 MW) is expected to generate around 1,000 million units annually, while the 186 MW Tato-I Project (3×62 MW) will produce about 803 million units annually. Together, the two projects will deliver nearly 1,800 million units of clean electricity every year.
Beyond power generation, the projects will create new employment opportunities, enhance regional infrastructure, and deliver substantial socio-economic benefits to Arunachal Pradesh. They are also expected to play a vital role in advancing India’s clean energy targets and supporting the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047.
Since its inception in 1976, NEEPCO has been the backbone of power generation in India’s Northeast, operating with an installed capacity of 2,057 MW across hydro, gas, and solar projects. Since 2020, it has been functioning as a subsidiary of NTPC Limited.
As India’s largest integrated power utility, NTPC Limited contributes nearly one-fourth of the nation’s electricity demand with a total installed capacity of 83 GW. The company currently has 30.90 GW under construction, including 13.3 GW of renewable capacity, and is committed to achieving 60 GW of renewable energy by 2032, reinforcing India’s march towards Net Zero.
