PSUs Forge India’s Naval Strength: Power Advanced Frigates INS Udaygiri & INS Himgiri

From indigenous steel to frontline strength — PSUs anchor India’s naval modernisation journey

India’s Public Sector Undertakings have once again demonstrated their pivotal role in nation-building, as the Indian Navy today commissioned its two advanced frontline frigates – INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri – in the presence of Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh.

At the heart of these warships lies the strength of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), which supplied nearly 8,000 tonnes of critical-grade steel for their construction. The Maharatna steelmaker partnered closely with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE) to ensure indigenous supply of high-grade hot-rolled sheets and plates from its Bokaro, Bhilai and Rourkela Steel Plants.

PSU Backbone of Defence Indigenisation

By developing and supplying such specialized steel, SAIL has significantly contributed to import substitution, reducing India’s reliance on foreign suppliers. Its Special Plate Plant at Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) alone has delivered over 100,000 tonnes of critical steel for defence applications including tanks, warships, and missiles.

This achievement aligns seamlessly with ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’, showcasing how PSUs are central to creating a self-reliant defence ecosystem. SAIL’s legacy is well-established — having supplied steel for iconic naval assets like INS Vikrant, INS Nilgiri, INS Ajay, INS Nistar, INS Arnala, INS Vindhyagiri, and INS Surat.

A Stronger, Ever-Ready Navy

Speaking at the ceremony, Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh said the commissioning of INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri not only augments the Navy’s combat capabilities but also reinforces India’s role as a “First Responder” and “Preferred Security Partner” in the Indian Ocean Region.

“From combating piracy, curbing smuggling and maritime terrorism, to providing relief in natural disasters, these warships will prove to be game-changers in complex operations,” he asserted.

He further underlined that the Navy has become a major pillar of India’s economic security, safeguarding critical sea lanes that support the country’s energy requirements and trade.

Operation Sindoor – A Testament to Naval Might

Rajnath Singh lauded the Navy’s swift and coordinated response during Operation Sindoor, highlighting the synergy among the armed forces and security agencies.

“The adversary now realises our strength and capability. India does not provoke, nor does it bow down. When our security is threatened, we respond with precision and effectiveness,” he said, while reminding that the operation was “not over, but only a pause.”

Symbol of National Unity & Strength

The commissioning of INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri marks more than just an expansion of naval power. It is a living symbol of India’s industrial strength, defence preparedness, and PSU-driven self-reliance.

From the steel that forms their hulls to the sailors who will command them, the frigates embody a seamless blend of indigenous manufacturing, technological innovation, and national resolve.
