Railways To Install CCTV Cameras In Coaches To Enhance Passenger Safety

CCTV Coverage in All 74,000 Coaches and 15,000 Locos to Ensure 360-Degree Surveillance

In a major move to enhance passenger safety, Indian Railways has decided to install CCTV cameras across all 74,000 passenger coaches and 15,000 locomotives. This follows the successful outcome of pilot installations in select trains of Northern Railway.

Each coach will be equipped with four dome-type CCTV cameras—two at each entrance area—while every locomotive will have six cameras for 360-degree monitoring. These will include one each at the front, rear, both sides, and dome cameras inside the cabs, along with desk-mounted microphones.

A high-level review meeting chaired by Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw and Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu was held on July 12, 2025. Senior officials from the Railway Board and concerned departments attended the meeting, where the ministers gave the green light for full-scale deployment.

The cameras will be STQC-certified and capable of recording high-quality footage at speeds above 100 kmph and under low-light conditions. The Railways is also exploring integration with the IndiaAI mission to enable real-time AI-powered surveillance.

To uphold passenger privacy, cameras will be placed only in common movement areas near the coach doors. This strategic move aims to deter criminal activity by organised gangs and improve overall travel safety without intruding into private spaces.

Indian Railways’ modernization efforts reflect its commitment to providing a safer, smarter, and more secure travel experience for all passengers.
