Interview for CMD Post at SAIL on March 28; 10 Candidates Shortlisted

Interviews for the post of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) are likely to be held on March 28, with the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) shortlisting 10 candidates for the prestigious top position.
List of Shortlisted Candidates
The candidates shortlisted for the CMD post include a mix of senior executives from SAIL, other PSUs, and government services:
- Manish Raj Gupta – Director (Mining), SAIL & CMD, Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (Additional Charge)
- Alok Verma – Director In-Charge (Rourkela Steel Plant) with additional charge of Director (Commercial), SAIL
- Dr. Ashok Kumar Panda – Director (Finance) with additional charge of Director (Commercial), SAIL
- Bipin Kumar Giri – Executive Director (Mines Development), SAIL
- Munna Prasad Singh – Executive Director (Mines), OGOM, CLMO, Rourkela Steel Plant
- Anish Sengupta – Executive Director (Projects), SAIL
- Krishna Gopal Agarwal – Director (Finance), RITES Limited
- Anup Kumar Satpathy – Chief Safety Officer, South East Central Railways
- Dr. Pudi Hariprasad – Chief Administrative Officer (Treasury & Reconciliation), Railways
- Chetan Prakash Jain – Additional Secretary & Financial Advisor and CMD, Central Electronics Limited
SAIL Insiders Likely to Dominate Race
According to industry sources, the race for the top post is primarily among candidates from within SAIL, given their domain expertise and operational experience in the steel sector. Candidates from outside organisations are considered to have limited chances in the selection process.
Interim CMD Decision Awaited
Meanwhile, attention has shifted to the Ministry of Steel, which is yet to decide on an interim CMD. The position will fall vacant after April 1, when incumbent CMD Amarendu Prakash demits office.
Final Appointment May Take Time
Even after PESB recommends a candidate, the appointment process is expected to take time. The selected name will undergo multi-level scrutiny across government departments before being placed before the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) for final approval.
