SAIL Supplies Indigenous Steel for INS Anjadip Ahead of Indian Navy Induction

The specialised steel was produced at SAIL’s integrated plants located at Bokaro, Bhilai and Rourkela

State-owned steel major Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has supplied the entire quantity of special-grade steel required for INS Anjadip, the third Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) corvette built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) for the Indian Navy.

INS Anjadip is set to join the Navy’s fleet as part of India’s ongoing maritime modernisation programme. The vessel follows the successful commissioning of INS Arnala and INS Androth last year under the ASW-SWC project.

The ASW-SWC corvettes are being indigenously constructed to replace the Navy’s ageing Abhay-class vessels and strengthen coastal anti-submarine warfare capabilities. Supporting this strategic initiative, SAIL has supplied nearly 3,500 tonnes of special-grade steel for all eight ASW-SWC corvettes being constructed by GRSE.

The specialised steel was produced at SAIL’s integrated plants located at Bokaro, Bhilai and Rourkela, highlighting the robustness of India’s domestic manufacturing and defence supply chain.

The development underscores SAIL’s growing role in strengthening India’s defence indigenisation efforts by reducing import dependence and supporting the broader vision of self-reliance in strategic sectors. Over the years, SAIL has supplied critical steel for several landmark naval platforms, including aircraft carriers, stealth frigates and advanced warships built within the country.

With indigenous material forming the backbone of modern naval assets, projects such as INS Anjadip reflect the increasing synergy between India’s public sector steel industry and defence shipbuilding ecosystem.
