Sanjay Kumar Singh Takes Over as CMD (Additional Charge) of NHPC Limited

He is a veteran hydropower engineer with rich experience in execution of mega projects in India & Bhutan

Sanjay Kumar Singh, Director (Projects), NHPC, has assumed additional charge of the post of Chairman & Managing Director of NHPC Limited, India’s premier hydropower company and a Navratna enterprise of the Government of India, with effect from 1st September 2025.

Singh has been serving as Director (Projects) since 24 July 2024. Prior to joining NHPC, he was Chief General Manager at SJVN Ltd. A Civil Engineer by qualification, Singh brings with him over 33 years of rich and varied experience in the power and infrastructure sector, particularly in the execution of mega and prestigious hydropower projects in India and Bhutan.

During his tenure as Director (Projects), NHPC successfully commissioned the 800 MW Parbati-II Hydroelectric Project, one of the most challenging projects featuring a 31.5 km Head Race Tunnel. The 2000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, the largest under-construction hydropower project in India, is also on the verge of commissioning under his leadership. Significant progress has also been achieved in several other NHPC and joint venture/subsidiary projects.

Singh also held additional charge of Director (Technical), NHPC, from 8 August 2024 to 16 April 2025. He currently chairs the Boards of NHPC Renewable Energy Limited and Jalpower Corporation Limited (wholly-owned subsidiaries of NHPC) and serves as Nominee Director on the Boards of Ratle Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited and Chenab Valley Power Projects Limited—joint ventures of NHPC and JKSPDCL.

In his earlier career at SJVN, Singh held key leadership roles, including Head of Projects at Sunni Dam HEP (construction stage), Naitwar Mori HEP (construction stage), Luhri HEP Stage-II (survey & investigation stage), and Jhakhol Sankri HEP (survey & investigation stage). He also served as Chief Executive Officer of STPL, a wholly-owned subsidiary of SJVN Ltd. Notably, he was instrumental in the construction of major components of India’s largest hydropower project, Nathpa Jhakri HEP (1500 MW), Himachal Pradesh; Tala HEP (1020 MW), Bhutan; and in pre-construction activities of Devsari HEP, Uttarakhand.
