India’s Clean Energy Transition Gets Major Boost as SECI and Andhra Pradesh Finalize 1200 MWh BESS and 50 MW Hybrid Project

Both the BESS and Hybrid Solar Project will follow the CAPEX Mode, with SECI undertaking full investment responsibilities

In a major step towards strengthening India’s renewable energy infrastructure, the Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI), a Navratna CPSU under the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE), today exchanged Government Orders (GOs) with the Government of Andhra Pradesh for developing a 1200 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Nandyal and a 50 MW Hybrid Solar Project.

The exchange took place during the Energy Session of the Andhra Pradesh Partnership Summit 2025 in Visakhapatnam, organised by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade and the Government of Andhra Pradesh, in collaboration with CII.

Project Approval and Mandate

The Ministry of Power, through an order dated 23 January 2025, designated SECI as the implementing agency for the 1200 MWh BESS project under Market-Based Operations. The project was approved by SECI Board Chairman Shri Santosh Kumar Sarangi on 22 October 2025.

MNRE continues to closely monitor the progress and implementation of both projects.

SECI to Develop Projects Under CAPEX Mode

Both the BESS and Hybrid Solar Project will follow the CAPEX Mode, with SECI undertaking full investment responsibilities. This ensures long-term asset creation and strengthens the clean energy infrastructure of Andhra Pradesh.

The Government Orders were formally handed over by Andhra Pradesh Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar in the presence of Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand and NREDCAP Vice Chairman M. Kamalakara Babu. SECI officials Sivakumar Venkat Vepakomma and Rohit Choubey represented the organisation.

A Key Milestone in India’s Green Energy Push

The exchange of GOs marks a pivotal milestone in enhancing Andhra Pradesh’s renewable energy capacity. These projects collectively represent:

  • A significant boost to grid-scale energy storage
  • Strengthening of renewable energy integration
  • Acceleration of India’s shift to a storage-enabled green grid

SECI reaffirmed its commitment to working with States and Central Ministries to speed up India’s clean energy transition. Together, these projects mark a major leap in storage-led renewable energy development, supporting a resilient, secure and sustainable clean energy ecosystem.
