SECL Wins National Honour for Water Conservation at Water Digest Awards 2026
SECL earned this national honour for its pioneering Mine Water Utilization initiative, which focuses on the sustainable use of water discharged from mining operations

In a significant recognition of its sustainability efforts, South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) has been conferred with the “Integrated Industrial Water Management & Stewardship Award” at the Water Digest Awards 2026.
The award was presented in New Delhi by the Minister of State for Jal Shakti, Government of India, Raj Bhushan Choudhary. It was received on behalf of SECL by Chairman-cum-Managing Director Harish Duhan and Director (Technical/Planning & Projects) Ramesh Chandra Mahapatra.
SECL earned this national honour for its pioneering Mine Water Utilization initiative, which focuses on the sustainable use of water discharged from mining operations. The initiative channels mine water for productive use, helping mitigate water scarcity in surrounding regions while supporting agricultural irrigation.

Speaking on the occasion, CMD Shri Harish Duhan said: “Water conservation remains one of SECL’s key priority areas. Through effective mine water utilization, we are not only optimizing resource use but also contributing to the welfare of local communities, particularly farmers.”
The initiative has significantly improved water availability in nearby rural areas, enabling farmers to undertake multiple cropping cycles annually. This has led to enhanced agricultural productivity, improved livelihoods, and strengthened sustainable water management practices in the region.
SECL’s recognition underscores the growing role of Public Sector Undertakings in driving environmental sustainability alongside core industrial operations.
