Shanvi’s Promise To All, “I Will Fly High”

On the occasion of International Girl Child Day today, let’s delve in the story of young girl Shanvi Chandel. She participated in the Girls Empowerment Mission (GEM) under the Corporate Social Responsibility of NTPC’s Koldam Hydro Power Station.

In the picturesque landscape of Himachal Pradesh, amidst the project affected area of NTPC Koldam, a young and determined star shines bright. Meet Shanvi Chandel, a 10-year-old girl hailing from the serene village of Badi, whose journey of empowerment began with the Girls Empowerment Mission (GEM) 2023.

Selected amongst 41 other talented girls from different villages, Shanvi embarked on a transformative month-long journey with the GEM program, commencing from 26th June to 24th July 2023. With aspirations as high as the surrounding mountains, Shanvi set out to fulfill her dreams, which would not have been possible without the support of her family and NTPC Koldam’s thoughtful initiative. Shanvi’s father, Mr. Manoj Kumar is a driver and one needs no introduction to the vulnerability a driver faces in the complex terrain of Himachal Pradesh. In a region where opportunities are scarce, the vulnerability faced by drivers like Mr. Kumar echoes the need for empowering the younger generation. Recognizing the immense potential in their daughter, Shanvi’s parents were eager for her to participate in the GEM program, which offered a glimmer of hope for a better future.

The GEM program proved to be a turning point in Shanvi’s life. It was here that she discovered the power of self-expression and the joy of learning. Beyond academics, the GEM initiative provided a holistic education that encompassed life skills, empowering Shanvi and her peers to emerge as confident young women, equipped to overcome any challenges that lie ahead.

At the heartwarming closing ceremony, Shanvi’s mother, Ranjna Devi, looked on with pride, witnessing the newfound shine in her daughter’s eyes. We are grateful to NTPC for providing such an extraordinary opportunity to our girls,” she said with tears of joy. The GEM program had not only transformed Shanvi but had also infused hope and optimism in the hearts of families across the region.
