Signing Of Contract Agreement For New Kathara Coking Coal Washery Under BOO Model – A Landmark Initiative By CCL

First-Ever BOO Model Project in CIL to Boost Quality of Indigenous Coking Coal and Reduce Import Dependency

In a pioneering step towards enhancing coal quality and reducing reliance on imported coking coal, Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL), has signed a landmark contract for the establishment of the New Kathara Coking Coal Washery under the Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model.

This first-of-its-kind initiative under the BOO framework within CIL was formalized through a contract agreement between CCL and M/s Global Coal and Mining Pvt. Ltd. (GCML)—a company with established credentials in coal beneficiation infrastructure. The agreement was executed by Suresh Talankar, General Manager, Coal Washery Construction Division, and Sanjay Kumar, General Manager, Kathara Area, on behalf of CCL, and the Managing Director of GCML.

The signing ceremony was graced by Nilendu Kumar Singh, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, CCL; Pawan Kumar Mishra, Director (Finance); and Harsh Nath Mishra, Director (Personnel), highlighting the strategic importance of the project.

Key Project Highlights:

  • Location: Kathara Area, Bokaro district, Jharkhand
  • Capacity: 3.00 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA)
  • Investment: Approximately ₹380 crore
  • Implementation Timeline: 36 months
  • Model: Build-Own-Operate (BOO)

Once operational, the washery is expected to significantly reduce ash content in coal, thereby improving its suitability for metallurgical use, especially steel manufacturing. This enhancement in quality is expected to support the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission and strategic goals under Mission Coking Coal.

The project is also projected to create direct and indirect employment in the region, contributing to the socio-economic development of Bokaro and surrounding areas.

The initiative has been driven under the technical guidance of Shankar Nagarchi, Director Technical (Project & Planning), and Chandrashekhar Tiwari, Director Technical (Operations), CCL.

CMD’s Perspective

Speaking on the occasion, Nilendu Kumar Singh, CMD, CCL, said: “The New Kathara Washery Project is a testimony to our sustained commitment to improve coal quality, enhance operational efficiency, and deliver value to our stakeholders. The facility will also promote local employment and play a crucial role in the socio-economic upliftment of the area.”

He further added that CCL is actively working towards the establishment of four more washeries as part of its broader modernization and capacity expansion strategy.
