THDC India Commissions 4th Unit of Tehri PSP, Boosting NTPC Group Capacity to 89,378 MW
250 MW unit begins commercial operations from April 12, 2026, strengthening India’s pumped storage capabilities

THDC India Limited has successfully commissioned the fourth unit of the Tehri Pumped Storage Plant (PSP), marking a significant milestone in India’s hydropower and energy storage landscape. The newly commissioned 250 MW unit has commenced commercial operations from 00:00 hours on April 12, 2026.
With this addition, the total installed capacity of the NTPC Limited group has risen to an impressive 89,378 MW, reinforcing its leadership in the country’s power generation sector.
The Tehri PSP, configured as a 4×250 MW project, is a critical asset for grid stability and peak load management. The commissioning of the fourth unit completes the full 1,000 MW capacity of the pumped storage plant, enhancing the group’s ability to balance supply and demand efficiently, especially with increasing renewable energy integration.
This latest unit contributes an additional 250 MW to the grid, further strengthening regional power infrastructure. Pumped storage projects like Tehri PSP play a pivotal role in ensuring energy security by storing surplus power and supplying it during peak demand periods.
Following this development, the NTPC group’s commercial capacity has reached 88,298 MW. For THDC India Limited, the commissioning has elevated its total installed and commercial capacity to 3,907 MW, consolidating its position as a key player in India’s hydropower segment.
The successful commissioning and operational readiness of the unit underscore the group’s continued commitment to expanding its clean and flexible energy portfolio while supporting the nation’s growing power requirements.
