Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Engages With Interns At PMIS North-East Roundtable In Shillong

Visits NTPC Stall Showcasing AR/VR Innovation; Lauds PSU’s Role in Youth Skilling and Industry-Academia Integration

The Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS) North-East Roundtable was successfully organised today at the Courtyard by Marriott, Shillong, bringing together young interns from across the region to share their experiences and aspirations. The event was graced by Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, along with senior government officials and industry representatives.

During the exhibition walkthrough,the Union Finance Ministrer and CM Sangma visited the NTPC stall, which featured immersive Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) modules. Manned by NTPC officials and PMIS interns, the stall provided an interactive glimpse into power plant operations — reflecting NTPC’s commitment to advanced, tech-enabled learning and real-time industry exposure for the youth.

Addressing the interns and dignitaries, Sitharaman emphasised the Union Government’s efforts to bridge the gap between academic education and practical industry experience through initiatives like PMIS. She acknowledged the valuable role of Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) such as NTPC in mentoring students with modern tools and hands-on training, preparing them to be globally competitive and future-ready.

“The Government is focused on enabling India’s youth, especially in the North-East, to gain equal access to opportunities,” she said. “PMIS is a key initiative to empower first-generation graduates and young women with industry-relevant skills and confidence.”

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma expressed gratitude to the Central Government for selecting Shillong as the host city for this significant North-East engagement. He reaffirmed the Meghalaya Government’s commitment to promoting skilling and entrepreneurship among local youth.

“PMIS is opening up new pathways for the young people of Meghalaya and the North-East,” said Sangma. “Our youth must take full advantage of these platforms to build their capabilities and contribute meaningfully to the region’s and the nation’s development.”

The programme also featured an experience-sharing session by interns, the screening of a special PMIS documentary film, and the felicitation of dignitaries. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Jagdish Chelani, Joint Secretary, Government of Meghalaya, followed by high tea.

NTPC’s enthusiastic participation at the PMIS North-East Roundtable underscores its unwavering commitment to nurturing future talent through innovative, immersive learning tools.
