BPCL Achieves Major Offshore Engineering Milestone, Strengthening India’s Energy Self-Sufficiency
2.3 km sea-to-land HDD crossing showcases India’s growing offshore engineering capability and strengthens resilient fuel transportation infrastructure

India’s energy Maharatna Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has achieved a significant milestone in offshore engineering, reinforcing India’s growing Aatmanirbharta in fuel logistics and advancing the nation’s journey toward energy self-sufficiency under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In a challenging inter-tidal zone—where tidal windows continuously shift and operational precision is critical—BPCL successfully completed a 10-inch, 2.3-kilometre Offshore Sea-to-Land Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) pull under the Mumbai–Rasayani Pipeline Project. The feat marks one of India’s first offshore HDD crossings of this scale, showcasing the country’s growing technological and engineering capabilities in complex energy infrastructure projects.
The achievement demonstrates BPCL’s expertise in executing technically demanding operations while ensuring safety, efficiency, and environmental sensitivity in offshore conditions.
Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri lauded the accomplishment, taking to X to congratulate the company. He stated that the milestone reflects the energy PSU’s commitment to advancing technical capability, strengthening infrastructure resilience, and delivering complex projects with precision and operational excellence.
“Kudos to Team BPCL,” the Minister remarked, highlighting the importance of such innovations in strengthening India’s fuel supply chain and long-term energy security.
The successful execution of the offshore HDD crossing is expected to enhance fuel transportation reliability while supporting India’s broader vision of building robust, self-reliant energy infrastructure.
