CMD BCCL participates in two-day National Workshop (BMES-2026) at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad

Workshop focuses on bridging mathematics and earth sciences for advanced exploration and modelling

The two-day national workshop BMES-2026 on “Bridging Mathematics and Earth Sciences: Tools for Exploration, Modelling and Analysis”, organised by the Department of Applied Geophysics, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, was inaugurated today with participation from leading academicians, researchers, and industry experts.

Mr. Manoj Kumar Agarwal, Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD), Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), attended the event as a special guest and addressed the gathering. In his remarks, Mr. Agarwal described mathematics as the universal language of science, enabling a deeper understanding of the Earth’s structure and its natural resources.

He highlighted the growing importance of mathematical modelling in mineral exploration, geological studies, hydrology, and environmental analysis. Emphasising the role of data analytics, machine learning, and simulation techniques, he said these tools are significantly enhancing accuracy and offering predictive insights in geosciences.

Describing such interdisciplinary platforms as essential for industry–academia collaboration, Mr. Agarwal noted that workshops like BMES-2026 inspire young researchers to innovate and apply scientific solutions to real-world challenges faced by the mining and energy sectors.

The inaugural session was also attended by Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Director, IIT (ISM), along with Deans of various departments, senior faculty members, academicians, scientists, and experts from the fields of mathematics and earth sciences. Participants from universities and research institutions across the country are taking part in the workshop.

The two-day programme features technical sessions, expert discussions, and practical demonstrations, aimed at enhancing precision and innovation in earth sciences through modern scientific tools such as mathematical modelling, data analytics, and simulation techniques.
