India Fully Prepared Amid Evolving Middle East Situation: Energy Supplies Robust
Safeguarding interests of Indian consumers remains the Government’s highest priority, Says Hardeep Singh Puri

Amid the evolving geopolitical situation in the Middle East, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri has assured that India remains fully prepared to manage any potential disruptions in global energy supplies.
Briefing the media on the current scenario, the Minister stated that India, as the world’s third-largest importer, fourth-largest refiner, and fifth-largest exporter of petroleum products, is well positioned to handle short-term supply challenges. The country currently maintains adequate stocks of crude oil and key petroleum products, including petrol, diesel, and aviation turbine fuel (ATF).
Diversified Sourcing to Reduce Risk
In recent years, India has significantly diversified its crude oil procurement strategy to enhance both availability and affordability. Indian energy companies now source crude from a wider basket of countries, reducing dependence on traditional supply routes.
Importantly, several cargoes are not routed through the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz, thereby mitigating risks arising from any disruption in that corridor. These alternative supply lines are expected to remain operational and will help cushion any temporary logistical challenges.
24×7 Control Room Monitoring
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has activated a 24×7 Control Room to continuously monitor the supply and stock position of petroleum products across the country. According to official sources, the Government is currently “reasonably comfortable” with inventory levels.
The Minister emphasized that safeguarding the interests of Indian consumers remains the Government’s highest priority. Continuous assessment of global developments is underway, and phased interventions may be undertaken, if required, to ensure uninterrupted supply and price stability.
India’s calibrated approach, combining diversified sourcing, adequate inventories, and real-time monitoring, is aimed at ensuring energy security during the current period of geopolitical uncertainty.
