Hardeep Singh Puri Visits Qatar for LNG Supply Talks
India’s diplomatic outreach is closely linked to its rising exposure to supply disruptions from the Gulf region

Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri arrived in Doha on Thursday for a crucial two-day visit, where he was received by senior Qatari officials, including representatives from QatarEnergy and India’s Ambassador to Qatar.
The visit comes at a critical juncture, just days after a fragile two-week ceasefire was announced between the United States and Iran—a development that has offered temporary relief but little long-term certainty for global energy markets.
India’s Growing Energy Vulnerability
India’s diplomatic outreach is closely linked to its rising exposure to supply disruptions from the Gulf region. The country imports nearly 60% of its LPG requirements, with a significant share sourced from key Gulf suppliers such as:
- Qatar
- Saudi Arabia
- United Arab Emirates
- Kuwait
This heavy dependence underscores the urgency behind India’s engagement with regional partners, especially at a time when geopolitical tensions continue to threaten supply stability.
Strategic Context
The combination of geopolitical uncertainty, infrastructure disruptions, and increasing global competition for LNG has made energy security a top priority for India. Puri’s visit is expected to focus not only on ensuring uninterrupted LNG supplies but also on strengthening long-term energy partnerships with Qatar.
As the situation evolves, India’s balancing act between immediate supply needs and long-term diversification will remain critical to sustaining its energy growth trajectory.
