Hindustan Zinc Saves Over 1 Lakh GJ of Energy in FY25; Enough to Power Nearly 19,000 Households Annually
Energy efficiency initiatives cut over 20,000 tCO₂e emissions as company accelerates renewable transition

Hindustan Zinc Limited, India’s only and the world’s largest integrated zinc producer, has reported energy savings of over 1 lakh gigajoules (GJ) in FY25 through focused efficiency and decarbonisation initiatives across its Rajasthan operations. The achievement translates into a reduction of more than 20,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (tCO₂e) greenhouse gas emissions.
The disclosure coincides with National Energy Conservation Day, underlining the company’s growing emphasis on sustainable mining and industrial energy efficiency.
To put the savings into perspective, the energy conserved during FY25 is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of nearly 19,000 Indian households, based on the Ministry of Power’s estimate of an average household usage of 1,538 kWh per year. The comparison highlights the tangible impact of industrial efficiency on national energy security and everyday life.
Over recent years, Hindustan Zinc has implemented a wide range of energy optimisation measures, including the deployment of variable-frequency drives (VFDs), adoption of high-efficiency equipment, optimisation of smelting and process-heat systems, and AI-enabled digital monitoring platforms for real-time energy management.
Parallelly, the company has significantly strengthened its renewable energy portfolio. In March 2025, Hindustan Zinc signed a round-the-clock Power Delivery Agreement (PDA) with Serentica Renewables, which will scale its green power capacity to 530 MW. The move supports the company’s target of sourcing 70% of its total electricity from renewables by FY28.
These efforts align with Hindustan Zinc’s Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)-validated decarbonisation pathway, including its commitment to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050 or earlier, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Commenting on the milestone, Arun Misra, CEO – Hindustan Zinc, said, “Our journey is guided by a simple but powerful belief—that the mines of the future will be defined not just by what we produce, but by how responsibly and intelligently we produce it. Energy efficiency, electrified logistics and renewable power are enabling us to reimagine mining for a low-carbon world.”
The company’s FY25 sustainability performance also includes 6.7 lakh tonnes of GHG emission savings, an increase in renewable energy usage to nearly 19% of its power mix, and recognition as the world’s most sustainable metals and mining company for the third consecutive year by the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment. Hindustan Zinc also became India’s first member of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM).
As part of its broader sustainability outreach, Hindustan Zinc has launched “The Power of Less”, a company-wide energy awareness campaign featuring No Vehicle Days, energy-saving challenges, quizzes, creative competitions, and behavioural change initiatives involving employees, families, and local communities.
Together, these initiatives reflect Hindustan Zinc’s ambition to transform into a future-ready, multi-metal enterprise while supporting India’s clean energy transition and Rajasthan’s long-term economic development.
