IIM Jammu Launches Trekking-Based Leadership Skills MDP for NTPC Managers in Lower Himalayas
Innovative experiential programme blends classroom learning with Himalayan trekking to build leadership capabilities among NTPC managers

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Jammu has launched a unique trekking-based Leadership Skills Management Development Programme (MDP) for managers of NTPC, blending experiential learning with the inspiring landscapes of the Lower Himalayas.
The programme was formally inaugurated at the Vedanta MDP Block on January 13 with a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony, marking the beginning of an immersive leadership development journey. Designed to enhance leadership capabilities through real-world challenges, the three-day programme is scheduled from January 12 to 14.
The intensive MDP integrates classroom learning with guided trekking experiences, enabling participants to build critical leadership competencies such as team building, strategic thinking, conflict resolution, sustainability, effective communication, intrapreneurship, and digital transformation.
The inaugural ceremony was presided over by Prof. Jabir Ali, Programme Director and Dean (Faculty & Research), IIM Jammu, and was attended by Prof. Sanjeev Pathak, Chairperson (Executive Education & Consultancy), and Dr. Ateeque Shaikh, Programme Director, IIM Jammu.
Addressing the participants, Prof. Jabir Ali highlighted IIM Jammu’s rapid growth—from its initial transit campus to the development of world-class infrastructure and a robust academic ecosystem. He emphasized the Institute’s strong faculty base, focus on quality excellence, international collaborations, and its progress towards achieving Triple Crown international accreditation.
Stressing the importance of sacrifice, commitment, and leadership, Prof. Ali encouraged participants to emerge as torchbearers of organizational excellence. He also invited them to explore executive academic pathways such as EMBA and PhD programmes, and reaffirmed his availability for academic and professional collaboration. He noted that the programme aims to bring a meaningful transformation in leadership perspective.
In his address, Prof. Sanjeev Pathak underscored the privilege of working in a Maharatna organization like NTPC, where strong leadership plays a critical role in sustained performance and growth. He described the programme as highly enriching, with a strong focus on value creation, experiential learning, practical application, peer learning, and continuous engagement. He also provided an overview of IIM Jammu’s Executive Education and Consultancy initiatives and encouraged participants to stay connected with the Institute and share their professional success stories.
Participants introduced themselves and shared their expectations from the programme, reflecting strong enthusiasm for experiential learning and leadership development.
The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Ateeque Shaikh, Programme Director, IIM Jammu.
The trekking-based MDP underscores IIM Jammu’s commitment to innovative pedagogy, leadership excellence, and industry-academia collaboration, offering transformative learning experiences for senior professionals.
