SECL Leads the Way in Best Practices under Special Campaign 5.0
Innovative Waste-to-Wealth, Women Empowerment, and Mechanised Cleaning Initiatives Reflect SECL’s Commitment to Sustainability

Under the Government of India’s Special Campaign 5.0, South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), a leading subsidiary of Coal India Limited, has emerged as a frontrunner in implementing innovative best practices that combine cleanliness, sustainability, and social inclusion.
At the core of SECL’s mission lies its flagship “Waste to Wealth” initiative at Gevra, Asia’s largest coal mine. The company has established a Solid and Liquid Resource Management (SLRM) Centre for scientific waste segregation and processing. The biodegradable waste is converted into nutrient-rich compost, supporting soil health and SECL’s large-scale plantation drives — turning “trash into treasure” and setting a benchmark for circular economy practices in the mining sector.

Adding a creative touch to sustainability, SECL’s “Kabad Se Kalkriti” project at the Central Excavation Workshop (CEWS), Gevra, transforms industrial scrap into artistic masterpieces. Iconic installations such as a replica of the S-400 missile system, a BrahMos missile model, and a statue of a coal miner made entirely of discarded machine parts now adorn SECL campuses, blending industrial innovation with aesthetic expression.
Promoting inclusivity and gender diversity, SECL inaugurated its first-ever women-operated Store Unit at the Korba Area for spare parts management — a pioneering step in women empowerment within India’s coal sector.

To enhance cleanliness infrastructure, SECL deployed 20 Mechanical Road Sweeping Machines across nine operational areas for dust-free roads and improved hygiene standards in mining colonies and coal transportation routes.
The campaign also included health and wellness camps, installation of bio-toilets, felicitation of Safai Mitras, and community-level cleanliness drives under Swachhata Hi Seva – Swachhotsav 2025, especially along the banks of the Arpa River.
By integrating technology, creativity, and inclusivity, SECL has reaffirmed its commitment to the twin goals of Swachhata (cleanliness) and Sustainability, setting new benchmarks for other public sector enterprises to emulate.
