THDCIL Achieves Major Milestone as 250 MW 3rd Unit of Tehri Variable Speed PSP Begins Commercial Operations
Power Minister Manohar Lal Highlights PSP’s Role in Grid Stability and Clean Energy Transition

THDC India Limited (THDCIL) has achieved a significant milestone with the commencement of the Commercial Operation Date (COD) of the 3rd Unit (250 MW) of the 1000 MW Tehri Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant (PSP). This marks another remarkable achievement for the company, as the Tehri PSP stands as the largest Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant developed by a Central Public Sector Enterprise. The COD was virtually commenced today from New Delhi by Union Minister of Power, Manohar Lal.
Speaking on the occasion, the Power Minister said, “Today, I officially commenced the Commercial Operation Date (COD) process of the 3rd Unit (250 MW) of the 1000 MW Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) at Tehri, Uttarakhand. This landmark achievement marks India’s first Variable Speed PSP and strengthens our clean energy transition, supporting the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047.”
He underlined the crucial role of Pumped Storage Plants in ensuring reliable power supply, grid stability, and supporting the increasing integration of renewable energy into the national grid.
Minister of State for Power, Shripad Y. Naik, applauded THDCIL’s leadership in pumped storage development and its key contribution to the nation’s energy security. Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary, Ministry of Power, also congratulated the organisation for its continued momentum in commissioning major infrastructure projects this year.
The Tehri PSP represents a technological benchmark in variable-speed capabilities, offering superior operational flexibility and enhanced round-trip efficiency. Its successful commissioning once again positions THDCIL at the forefront of advanced hydropower innovation and reinforces India’s global standing in clean and sustainable energy solutions.
The event was also attended by Ghanshyam Prasad, Chairperson, CEA; Gurdeep Singh, CMD, NTPC; Sipan Kumar Garg, CMD, THDCIL; along with senior officials from the power sector.
