The Summit is a high-level event, bringing world leaders together to forge a new international consensus on how we deliver a better present and safeguard the future. Effective global cooperation is increasingly critical to our survival but difficult to achieve in an atmosphere of mistrust, using outdated structures that no longer reflect today’s political and economic realities.

The aim of the Summit of the Future is twofold:

  • Accelerate efforts to meet our existing international commitments
  • Take concrete steps to respond to emerging challenges and opportunities

The Pact will be negotiated, and endorsed by countries in the lead-up to and during the Summit in September 2024.The result will be a world – and an international system – that is better prepared to manage the challenges we face now and in the future, for the sake of all humanity and for future generations.

The Summit will also offer interactive dialogues on the themes of:

  • Transforming global governance and turbocharging the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development;
  • Enhancing multilateralism for international peace and security;
  • Towards a Common Digital Future: Strengthening inclusive innovation and cooperation to bridge the digital divides; and
  • The Future Starts Now: Enhancing the global system for current and future generations.

Negotiations for the Pact for the Future have been co-facilitated by Germany and Namibia. Sweden and Zambia have co-facilitated the talks on the Global Digital Compact. Jamaica and the Netherlands are the co-facilitators of the intergovernmental process for the Declaration on Future Generations.

The goal of the Summit is to reinvigorate and restore trust in multilateralism. Described as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity… to mend eroded trust and demonstrate that international cooperation can effectively achieve agreed goals and tackle emerging threats and opportunities,” it is expected “to forge a new international consensus on how we deliver a better present and safeguard the future.”
