Coal India Marks Milestone with Women-Led Initiatives in Mining and Healthcare
Women in Coal Mining: Coal India Inaugurated First All-Women Dispensary recently

Coal India Limited (CIL) has inaugurated its first dispensary managed entirely by women at Vasant Vihar, Bilaspur under South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) on 14 July 2025. Staffed by an all-women team, the facility underscores CIL’s growing commitment to gender equity and leadership opportunities for women in the coal sector.
CIL and its subsidiaries have implemented several women-led initiatives across the country, including:
- Healthcare: Women-managed dispensaries at SECL (Bilaspur), CCL (Ranchi), BCCL (Dhanbad), and WCL (Nagpur).
- Technical Units: Women-led Condition Monitoring Lab at SECL, Centralised Technical Centre for LED & Solar equipment at Dhanbad, and Cost & Budget Cell at NCL HQ, Singrauli.
- Leadership Development: Launch of “Jyoti – Rising Together, Leading the Way”, a five-month women’s leadership programme at IICM, Ranchi.
- Employment Policy: Female dependents now eligible for dependent employment regardless of marital status.
- Representation: Mandatory inclusion of at least one woman in all committees across CIL.
- Technical Training: Women employees trained in mining operations, rescue and recovery, and underground work.
- Milestone in BCCL: First women-operated LED & solar equipment technical centre at Dhanbad.
- Safety & Inclusivity: Internal Complaints Committees (ICCs) active under the POSH Act.
- NLCIL Integration: 190 women employed in mining operations, including 48 executives and statutory posts like surveyors, mining sirdars, and overmen.
Union Minister of Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, shared this information in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today, noting that women are now entering roles traditionally reserved for men, strengthening inclusivity in the mining sector.
