NMDC Signs MoU with IIT Kanpur to Strengthen Cybersecurity and Advance Digital Technologies
MoU to accelerate the adoption of advanced digital technologies across NMDC's operations

In a significant move to deepen industry–academia collaboration, NMDC, India’s largest iron ore producer, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur to enhance cybersecurity and accelerate the adoption of advanced digital technologies across its operations.
The MoU was signed by Mr. Satyendra Rai, Executive Director (Digital Transformation), NMDC, and Prof. Ashoke De, Dean (R&D), IIT Kanpur, in the presence of Prof. Manindra Agrawal, Director, IIT Kanpur, senior NMDC officials, and representatives from the institute.
Under this partnership, NMDC and IIT Kanpur will collaborate across several strategic areas, including:
- Cybersecurity risk assessments
- Policy, governance, and compliance frameworks
- Integration and advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML)
- Strengthening security operations and incident response
- Capacity building through training and knowledge sharing
- Joint research, innovation, and development of proof-of-concept solutions
The two organisations will jointly conduct training programmes, undertake research studies, run pilot projects, and develop prototype technologies to strengthen NMDC’s digital ecosystem.
Commenting on the collaboration, Amitava Mukherjee, CMD, NMDC, said, “This MoU brings IIT Kanpur’s advanced research capabilities into NMDC’s extensive operational ecosystem. This collaboration will help us strengthen our digital defences, improve operational intelligence, and build a secure and future-ready technological foundation for NMDC.”
The agreement underscores NMDC’s commitment to becoming a digitally empowered and future-ready mining organisation.
