BSNL Launches Nationwide Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi) Services Across All Telecom Circles

New service enables seamless calling over Wi-Fi, strengthens connectivity in low-signal and remote areas

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), India’s premier state-owned telecommunications service provider, has announced the nationwide rollout of Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi) services across all telecom circles in the country, marking a significant milestone in its ongoing network modernisation programme.

The VoWiFi service, also known as Wi-Fi Calling, allows BSNL customers to make and receive voice calls and messages over a Wi-Fi network, ensuring clear and reliable connectivity even in locations with weak or no mobile signal. These include homes, offices, basements, high-rise buildings and remote or rural areas.

BSNL said the service is now available to all its customers nationwide, offering improved indoor coverage and enhanced call quality without the need for additional applications or hardware.

Seamless Calling Using Existing Mobile Numbers

VoWiFi is an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS)-based service that supports seamless handover between Wi-Fi and cellular networks. Calls are made using the customer’s existing mobile number and phone dialer, ensuring a familiar and uninterrupted calling experience.

Importantly, the service works without third-party apps, making it secure, user-friendly and fully integrated with BSNL’s core network.

Boost for Rural and Remote Connectivity

The new service is expected to be particularly beneficial in rural and remote regions, where mobile network coverage may be limited but a stable Wi-Fi connection is available. Customers can use VoWiFi over BSNL Bharat Fiber or any other broadband service to stay connected.

BSNL highlighted that VoWiFi will also help reduce network congestion, improving overall service quality, especially in densely populated or indoor environments.

Free Service, Wide Device Support

VoWiFi is being offered free of cost, with no additional charges for Wi-Fi-based calls. Most modern smartphones support Wi-Fi Calling, and customers simply need to enable the feature in their handset settings.

For device compatibility and assistance, customers can visit their nearest BSNL customer service centre or contact the BSNL helpline at 1800-1503.

Step Towards Network Modernisation

The nationwide launch of VoWiFi underscores BSNL’s commitment to bridging the digital divide and improving telecom services in underserved areas. The initiative aligns with the company’s broader efforts to modernise its network infrastructure and deliver reliable, high-quality connectivity across India.
