Amid rising concerns triggered by global developments and social media chatter, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has firmly asserted that India’s petroleum and LPG supply remains fully secure, dismissing reports of shortages as a “deliberate and coordinated misinformation campaign.”
The Ministry emphasized that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel, or LPG anywhere in the country, urging citizens not to fall prey to panic-inducing content circulating online.
No Fuel Shortage, No Rationing Across India

The Ministry clarified that isolated instances of long queues at petrol pumps were not due to supply issues, but rather triggered by panic buying fueled by misleading social media videos.
To further strengthen supply chains, oil companies have increased credit limits for petrol pump dealers from 1 day to 3 days, ensuring uninterrupted fuel availability.
Crude Oil Supply Stable Despite Global Tensions
Despite disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz and ongoing geopolitical tensions, India’s crude supply remains robust.
- Oil sourced from 41+ global suppliers
- Refineries operating at over 100% capacity
- Next 60 days of crude supplies already secured
The government stated that global supply diversification has more than offset any disruptions, leaving no supply gap.
Strategic Reserves Strong, No Cause for Concern
Countering claims of critically low reserves, the Ministry clarified:
- India has ~60 days of total stock cover
- Total reserve capacity stands at 74 days
- Additional procurement for upcoming months already secured
The government dismissed claims of “only 6 days of stock” as false and misleading, stating that India remains energy-secure for the foreseeable future.
LPG Supply Robust; Production Up, Imports Reduced
India’s LPG supply has significantly strengthened:
- Domestic production increased by 40%
- Daily output: 50 TMT (over 60% of demand)
- Imports reduced to 30 TMT per day
Additionally:
- 800 TMT of LPG cargoes secured from multiple countries
- Supplies routed through 22 import terminals (up from 11 in 2014)
- Daily delivery stabilised at ~50 lakh cylinders after temporary surge
The Ministry also increased commercial LPG allocation to 50% to prevent hoarding and black marketing.
PNG Expansion Not Crisis-Driven
The push for Piped Natural Gas (PNG) is part of a long-term clean energy strategy — not a response to shortages.
- Domestic gas production: 92 MMSCMD
- Total demand: 191 MMSCMD
- PNG coverage expanded from 57 to 300+ geographical areas
- Household connections вырос from 25 lakh to over 1.5 crore
The Ministry reiterated: “LPG supply is secure; PNG is simply a better alternative.”
Government Warns of Strict Action Against Fake News
The government has expressed serious concern over fake videos, misleading posts, and fabricated claims circulating on social media.
Some content has:
- Misused visuals of fuel queues from other countries
- Falsely suggested emergency measures or fuel rationing in India
- Misrepresented routine administrative orders as crisis signals
The Ministry warned that spreading misinformation about essential commodities is a punishable offence, and strict action will be taken against offenders.
