RITES-led Consortium Delivers First Retrofit Metro Trainset to DMRC with Next-Gen PAPIS

RITES Ltd., in collaboration with consortium partners r2p Asia-Pacific Pty Ltd., Australia and ACT Fibreglass Ltd., has successfully delivered the first refurbished metro trainset equipped with a state-of-the-art IP-based Passenger Announcement and Passenger Information System (PAPIS) to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.
The upgraded trainset was formally flagged off by DMRC Managing Director Dr. Vikas Kumar at the Najafgarh Depot in New Delhi, marking a significant milestone in modernizing India’s metro infrastructure.
Next-Generation PAPIS Enhances Passenger Experience
The newly installed PAPIS is designed to significantly improve operational efficiency, passenger convenience, and safety. It features an advanced IP-based integrated architecture supported by a centralized Human Machine Interface (HMI), enabling seamless management of:
- Passenger information systems
- Public address announcements
- CCTV surveillance
- Communication systems
Smart Technology with Lower Lifecycle Costs
Built on Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology, the system minimizes wiring complexity while reducing lifecycle costs. This architecture enhances:
- Reliability and uptime
- Maintenance efficiency
- Scalability for future upgrades
The PAPIS also incorporates real-time diagnostics, ensuring faster fault detection and efficient system management.
Enhanced Safety and Compliance
Safety remains a core focus of the retrofit. The system integrates:
- CCTV monitoring

Additionally, the solution complies with BIS, EN, and MeitY/STQC standards, ensuring high-quality performance and regulatory adherence.
Comprehensive Train Refurbishment
Beyond PAPIS, the retrofit project included several upgrades to improve passenger comfort and operational performance:
- Repainting of saloon interiors
- Installation of IV couplers
- Fire detection systems
- Mobile charging sockets
- Refurbishment of EDB and relay panels
